Motivation

In the last week I have really had little to no motivation or inspiration. I have a deadline looming very fast with a number of assignments due in and I just can’t get the motivation together to be able to complete them.

In the last week I have had the pleasure of being in the presence and company of some very inspirational people like Janek Gwizdala and Esperanza Spalding, usually just seeing one of these live and in the flesh would be enough to give me a kick up the backside, but even they have not been able to kick start my seeming stuttering system.

However the realisation of my lack of motivation this week came from one of my tutors, I had not transcribed or learnt the song for this week and when asked if I wanted to get up and play I replied with a cowardly “No” with a bemused look on his face my tutor replied “What’s up Craig? You’re usually the one who’s on it every week and I can rely on”.

This sentence really hit deep and made me become very aware of my lack of commitment in the last week or so and made me feel extremely disheartened with myself. So having heard this, straight after lecture I went home and transcribed and learnt that song (Gaslighting Abbie - Steely Dan) and felt a little better.

However hoping my motivation would carry on today, to do some more coursework it hasn’t, and now I find myself procrastinating to avoid doing this work. It seems like this work will never get done…

How do you get your engine going again when you don’t have any inspiration or motivation?

Why can’t I sleep, my mind is racing like it usually does the night before something important is due to happen the next day.

I’m on stage in approximately 20 hours possibly playing one of the biggest shows of my life; in terms of where my career is going to take me.

The past 3 months have been the most intense and challenging period of my life cramming in uni as well as organising tonight’s gig with the: practicing, planning, booking the artists, hundreds of emails sent, frustration and countless more. (and somehow still came out with a 1st for the year)

And despite whatever happens later tonight, the only thing I really wanted was to see both of my parents in the same room being proud of the achievements I have made.

I guess I’ll still wait for that day to come…
